What is Ozone Therapy & Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation?

Ozone (O3) is a colorless and odorless gas comprised of 3 oxygen molecules in an unstable configuration. It is found naturally in the earth's stratosphere or the “ozone layer”, where it forms a protective barrier. This barrier prevents the sun’s ultraviolet sunlight (UV-B) radiation from reaching the Earth’s surface and harming plant and animal life. This is what is considered “good ozone.”

Ozone is also formed through the photochemical reaction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds - from vehicle emissions, refineries, industrial processes, paints, solvents, and household products - break apart in the presence of intense sunlight and recombine into new structures, creating ozone. This is what is considered “bad ozone.”

What is ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy, an oxidative therapy, has been used to disinfect and treat diseases, for over 150 years. It is a major auto hemotherapy (MAH) where the blood is ozonated at a specific ozone concentration and quantity, and then the treated blood is reinfused back into the patient.

Ozone’s effectiveness has been well-documented. In fact, it was used to disinfect drinking water in the 1800s and was known to treat as many as 114 diseases. In 1896 Nikola Tesla patented the first Ozone generator in the US and later formed the “Tesla Ozone Company.”

Recent research by Dr. Velio Bocci outlines some of the benefits of ozone therapy, which includes ozone’s ability to help the body fight pathogens, improve circulation, modulate the immune system, recruit stem cells, increase cellular efficiency, enhance oxygen-dependent processes (ATP production and mitochondrial function), inhibit inflammation and enhance anti-inflammatory system.

These are some of the indications for Ozone therapy:

  • Respiratory diseases
  • Circulatory conditions
  • Skin conditions
  • Wound care
  • Eye diseases
  • Viral/bacterial infections
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Orthopedics
  • Aesthetics/anti-aging
  • GI Disorders

Ozone can be administered in many different ways. At Verde Valley Naturopathic Medicine we use it in several IVs [ozone (MAH); ozone (MAH) + UBI IV; ozonated saline], topically in creams and oils, capsules, injections into joints and limb bagging.

Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UBI)

UBI is a process that involves removing blood from the body, exposes it to ultraviolet light, and then returning it back to the body.

UBI was first used in the early 1900’s for treatment of infections and as a method to treat sepsis. The development of antibiotics led to a decline in the use of UBI but the last decade has brought a resurgence in the use of UBI for treatment. Similarly to ozone, UBI is a treatment that works well for patients who have tried ‘everything’ with little or no improvement.

UBI can reduce inflammation, decrease pain, act as a germicidal treatment, help with cardiovascular improvement, and has immune modulating effects. UBI can increase red blood cell production, decrease platelet aggregation (clotting), improve oxygenation, decrease viscosity (thickness) of blood, enhance vasodilation (therefore improving micro and peripheral circulation), and more.

These are some of the indications for UBI use:

  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer
  • Bacterial infections
  • Viral infections
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Circulation conditions

With the Hemalumen system we use at Verde Valley Naturopathic Medicine, the blood is exposed to 5 different spectrums of light. The blood is exposed on its way out of the body as well as when it is being returned to the body. We also attach red light wrist bands and use Methylene Blue drops prior to treatment in order to enhance the benefits of UBI.

Ozone/UBI

Ozone and UBI have similarities in what they are able to treat and when combined are shown to have a better outcome than each used individually by itself. The combination of the two therapies also reduces any side effects that may occur with one used individually.
